Liesl Shurtliff

Author

Liesl Shurtliff grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, the fifth of eight children. Her seven siblings tortured her when she was growing up, but she really likes them now. Liesl loved dancing, singing, playing the piano, and reading books by Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, and Roald Dahl. She read Grimms’ Fairy Tales so often that she wore through the binding.

In college, Liesl studied Music Dance Theatre at Brigham Young University and dreamed of being a performer. After having her first child, Liesl realized that belting out show tunes during nap time was counterproductive so, seeking a quieter activity, she began writing. At first, writing was was just a creative substitute until she could do what she really wanted to do, but stories grabbed hold of her heart and she never looked back. (Sorry Broadway. It just wasn’t meant to be.)

Liesl is the author of the popular (Fairly) True Tales Series: RumpThe True Story of Rumpelstiltskin; JackThe True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk; RedThe True Story of Red Riding Hood; and, Grump: The True Story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Rump is a Texas Bluebonnet Master List Selection and was awarded the International Reading Association Children's and Young Adult Book Award.

A hilarious reimagining of its origin story with a wonderfully detailed world and interesting twists on classic characters. Sure to be a hit with fantasy fans looking for comedy.” —Booklist review of Grump

Liesl's newest book is Time Castaways: The Mona Lisa Key. Time Castaways is a thrilling middle grade trilogy about three city kids who get on the wrong subway train and wind up on a wild, magical mystery-adventure through time.

Today, Liesl lives with her husband and three children in Chicago, which is a wonderful city that it is decidedly flat and very cold in the winter. When she writes, she often wanders back to her childhood and gathers the magic that still remains. She hopes to share that magic with children everywhere.
